Simpson Desert Tag-Along-Tour Itinerary


  • Sunday Night : Hawker, South Australia
  • Monday : day 1
    • 8.30am start driving through Flinders Ranges to Parachilna onto Leigh Creek
    • Stopping at the coal fields to Lyndhursh (last l.p.g. available)
    • Stopping at Farina (remains of a town)
    • To Maree (fuel) onto "Muloorina" - private camp with toilet facilities Some info | Some comments
    • (approx 360 km for the day)
  • Tuesday : day 2
    • Oodnadatta Track check out bottom of Lake Eyre
    • Back to Maree to William Creek
    • Stopping at Wongianna Railway Station; part of the old Ghan railway
    • Also Mound Springs
    • William Creek Caravan Park (toilet, showers, BBQ facilities)
    • Meals optional at hotel (fuel available)
    • (approx 361 km for the day)
  • Wednesday : day 3
    • Continue on the Oodnadatta Track to Oodnadatta (last fuel & supply stop until Birdsville)
    • Onto Dalhousie Springs
    • Hot springs (showers & toilet) camp ground
    • Refresh in springs – (bring swimwear)
    • (approx 382 km for the day)
  • Thursday : day 4
    • Dalhousie Springs to Birdsville (takes 4 days)
    • Spending 4 nights in the Simpson Desert
    • (bush toilet only)
  • Friday : day 5
    • In Simpson Desert
  • Saturday : day 6
    • In Simpson Desert
  • Sunday : day 7
    • In Simpson Desert
  • Monday : day 8
    • Arrive at Birdsville today
    • Main meal at Birsdsville hotel tonight (included in tour cost)
  • Tuesday : day 9
    • Stopping at Burke & Wills Tree
  • Wednesday : day 10
    • Stopping at Innamincka for (fuel / supplies)
    • Going on to Coongie Lakes National Park
    • No showers or fires
    • Bush toilet only
    • Beautiful big lake
    • Coongie Lakes nip to Fort Grey camping ground
    • Down the Strzelecki Track turning off to Camerons Corner to Fort Grey bush camping
    • (approx 553 km for the day)
  • Friday : day 11
    • Fort Grey to Milparinka via Tibooburra (fuel / supplies etc.)
    • Onto Milparinka
    • Historic preserved buildings
    • Bush camp (bush toilet only)
    • Hotel meals available
    • (approx 180 km for the day)
  • Friday : day 12
    • Milparinka to Broken Hill
    • Saying goodbye and have a safe journey home
    • (296 kms)

Total Cost of the Trip

Total costs : per vehicle is $ 1250.00 for 2 persons
Extra adult $130.00 – children $70.00

10% discount applies if you book and pay 50% of costs 60 days before starting date

All money due 14 days prior to starting date.

Things you Should Know

  • Essential to bring: Good sense of humor. Good vehicle – 4WD only
  • Camping & cooking gear is available for hire if required
  • No trailers permitted in desert
  • Allow approx $1000.00 for fuel on trip
  • All permits and camping fees will be included, main meal at Birdsville only
  • Toilet / shower and tent provided where necessary
  • Satellite phone for emergency use will be available
  • Hot water for shower provided (depending on availability of water)
  • All necessary recovery gear is provided
    (vehicles must be fitted with a recovery hook on the front)

Times and distances may vary due to unforseen circumstances
eg : road closures – rain – break downs.

Tyre and mechanical repairs available at Oodnadatta – Birdsville – Tibbooburra

Cougar Tag–a–long Tours is a group of people travelling in their own four wheel drive vehicles being led by an experienced 4wd driver / guide.

All participants need to be self sufficient with water, food, fuel and camping / cooking gear. (this is available for hire.)
